German pharmacies struggle as blizzard halts critical medicine deliveries
Heavy snowfall and Storm Elli are causing major delays for pharmacy deliveries across Germany. Several large wholesalers have warned of disruptions, with some routes suspended entirely. Pharmacies in affected areas are now adjusting their services to cope with the extreme weather.
The problems began before the storm hit full force. On the previous day, wholesalers Gehe, Phoenix, and Noweda had already alerted pharmacies about possible delays. Noweda went further, announcing it would temporarily halt complaint credits for late deliveries due to the expected backlog.
Noweda has since cancelled all midday delivery runs. The restrictions cover the Harz mountains, Hamburg, and other northeastern regions. Alliance Healthcare Deutschland and Gehe have also warned pharmacies to expect cancellations and delays on multiple routes. Sanacorp has confirmed that all its delivery routes face potential disruptions. Meanwhile, Phoenix is contacting pharmacies individually to explain any necessary changes to schedules. Some local pharmacies are taking their own precautions: the Nordharz Center Pharmacy in Blankenburg has scaled back its delivery service, while a pharmacy in Münsterland is assessing each request on a case-by-case basis. Richard Kehr, another supplier, is preparing for extreme conditions. The company is offering customers emergency stockpiling options to help manage shortages during the disruption.
The severe weather has forced widespread changes to pharmacy logistics. Deliveries in the Harz, Hamburg, and northeastern Germany are among the worst affected. Pharmacies and wholesalers continue to adjust operations as the storm progresses.
