Germany’s €12M Push for Healthier Eating in Communal Spaces

The German government has launched a new competition to support healthier and more sustainable eating across the country. Called 'Nutritional Transition in the Region', the initiative will provide €12 million in funding for local projects. Authorities are now inviting applications from towns, organizations, and businesses before the early September deadline.

The competition focuses on improving food in communal settings, where over 17 million Germans eat daily. Eligible applicants include municipalities, districts, local groups, and private companies. Projects like KANNtine—led by Ernährungsrat Freiburg & Region e.V.—have already been highlighted as examples of the kind of work the scheme aims to support.

The €12 million fund will support selected regions in transforming their food systems. Successful projects will receive backing to implement sustainable and healthy eating solutions. Outcomes are expected to benefit millions who rely on communal catering every day.
