Germany’s sleep divide: How location shapes nightly rest and disruptions
Sleep habits in Germany vary significantly depending on location. A recent study underscores clear differences between eastern and western states, as well as between urban and rural areas. Factors such as pets, children, and smartphone use all influence sleep quality.
Berliners enjoy the longest sleep on workdays, averaging 7 hours and 52 minutes per night. However, their rest is often disrupted: 6% attribute this to late-night phone use, while 9% cite regular wake-ups from children. In contrast, people in Hesse sleep the least on weeknights, averaging just 7 hours and 12 minutes.
The findings highlight distinct sleep patterns across Germany. Eastern states and rural areas face unique challenges compared to western cities, where technology and lifestyle habits impact rest. Researchers suggest these differences may mirror broader social and health trends.
