Vegan diets are growing in popularity across Germany, with numbers rising from 1.3 million to around 2 million in recent years. This shift comes as supermarkets like Rewe, Edeka, and Aldi expand their plant-based offerings, turning limited selections into dedicated sections with hundreds of items. The focus is now on nutrient-rich meals built around vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains.

A vegan diet centres on plant foods, including vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. These provide essential nutrients like fibre, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Unlike animal products, plant-based meals contain no cholesterol and are typically lower in saturated fat, which supports heart health.

Fibre, found only in plants, helps digestion, stabilises blood sugar, and reduces the risk of heart disease. Key nutrients like potassium, magnesium, and healthy unsaturated fats further support cardiovascular function. Protein needs can be met through legumes, tofu, tempeh, whole grains, nuts, and seeds.

Iron and calcium are also available from plant sources, though some nutrients, like vitamin B12, require attention. Since B12 is produced by bacteria, vegans can obtain it through fortified foods or supplements. Processed plant-based alternatives, such as burgers and sausages, often contain less saturated fat and cholesterol than their meat counterparts.

The rise in veganism has led to a significant increase in product availability. Major supermarket chains now stock dedicated vegan sections, offering everything from dairy-free cheeses to meat-free minces. This expansion reflects a broader trend toward intentional, plant-focused eating patterns.

With more plant-based options than ever, vegan diets are becoming easier to follow. The shift supports better heart health, improved digestion, and a wider variety of nutrient-dense foods.
