A Worsening Crisis: Malnutrition Skyrockets Among Gaza's Children

Growing instances of child malnourishment escalating in Gaza region

The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is in a state of rapid decline, with children bearing the brunt of the struggle. Malnutrition and unhygienic living conditions are rampant, according to UNICEF. In the span of just one month, May 2025, a whopping 5,119 children aged six months to five years in Gaza - a region ravaged by 20 months of war - required urgent treatment for acute malnutrition, a rise of half compared to the preceding month, UNICEF reported.

The number of severely malnourished young children stands at 636, a group urgently in need of life-saving assistance. Yet, such aid remains scarce, as clean water, medical care, and treatment options are hard to come by in Gaza, lamented UNICEF. "In merely 150 days from the start of the year to the end of May, a staggering 16,736 children in Gaza sought relief from malnutrition. That's an alarming average of 112 kids a day," said Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa.

When malnutrition and disease coexist, a lethal cycle is set in motion. "Undernourished children become more susceptible to severe illnesses like acute diarrhea. On the flip side, acute and sustained diarrhea only aggravates existing health conditions and fuels malnutrition," UNICEF noted. UNICEF once again implored all parties involved in the conflict to bring an end to the violence, defend the civilian population, particularly children, uphold international humanitarian law and human rights, expedite humanitarian assistance, and liberate the captives detained in Israel.

The conflict in Gaza ignited with the attack by Hamas and other Islamic extremists on Israel on October 7, 2023. Approximately 1,200 lives were lost, and over 250 individuals were taken hostage to Gaza. Since then, the Israeli military has clashed with Hamas.

Additional Insights:- the resumption of hostilities in March 2025, after a ceasefire, led to a total blockade of aid entering Gaza, aggravating food security and overall health conditions- aid restrictions, starting from late 2024, caused a drastic rise in acute malnutrition rates among children and pregnant women- hospitals in Gaza are overwhelmed, under-resourced, and lack sufficient supplies to adequately treat malnourished children

Ongoing Responses and Calls for Action

  • UNICEF and Partners: UNICEF, working with nutrition centers throughout Gaza, provides treatment to malnourished children and seeks to raise awareness and secure emergency funding for medical care and nutrition
  • Medical Professionals and Health Organizations: Organizations such as Doctors of the World are tracking malnutrition rates and offering direct care, underscoring the urgent need for food, clean water, and medical supplies
  • Advocacy for a Ceasefire and Humanitarian Access: Healthcare workers and international agencies emphasize the crucial need for a ceasefire to facilitate humanitarian aid access, which is essential in alleviating existing malnutrition and averting further casualties

Despite these initiatives, the humanitarian crisis remains dire, with food shortages and limited aid access fueling the malnutrition crisis. Immediate action, such as lifting blockades, resuming aid delivery, and securing lasting peace, is critical to prevent widespread famine and save children's lives in Gaza.

The community policy and health-and-wellness sectors must prioritize the alleviation of malnutrition among Gaza's children, a crisis exacerbated by the ongoing conflict. Amidst the crisis, science and nutrition experts could collaborate with UNICEF and partner organizations to implement effective intervention strategies, ensuring the delivery of necessary resources for addressing acute malnutrition in Gaza.

Employment policies should play a role in improving the region's economy, thereby enabling access to clean water, medical care, and treatment options, which are essential in breaking the lethal cycle of malnutrition and disease in Gaza.
