Hazardous contamination, seafood items pulled from market shelves

Heinrich Abelmann GmbH has initiated a recall of several fish products under the Abelmann brand due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This bacterium can cause listeriosis, a serious infection in humans.

The affected products include "Smoked herring pieces in jelly, sweetened", "Herb-cured fillets in oil", and "Herring in jelly with egg, sweetened". The specific details for each product are as follows:

  • "Smoked herring pieces in jelly, sweetened" (250g): EAN 4102210021908, batches ranging from 079 to 198, and best before dates (BBE) between July 18, 2025, and November 14, 2025.
  • "Herb-cured fillets in oil" (Batch #197, BBE 13.08.2025): EAN: 4005957918299 / 4102210038180 / 4102210038166.
  • "Herring in jelly with egg, sweetened" (250g): EAN 4102210020604, batches ranging from 069 to 197, and BBE dates between August 8, 2025, and November 13, 2025. For the 1000g version, the EAN is 4102210020505, batches range from 062 to 192, and BBE dates are between July 1, 2025, and October 8, 2025.

Consumers are advised not to consume these products. The best before dates and batch numbers can be found on a small additional label on the top or bottom of the packaging.

Heinrich Abelmann GmbH sincerely regrets the incident and apologizes to all affected customers. The recall is a precautionary measure to protect consumers from the health-threatening bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.

Infection with listeria can cause gastrointestinal problems and, in severe cases, can result in serious illness, particularly in at-risk groups such as pregnant women or immunocompromised individuals. In some cases, infection can lead to flu-like symptoms.

Customers who have purchased an affected product can contact the email address [email protected] for a refund.

The recalled Abelmann products include food-and-drink items such as "Smoked herring pieces in jelly, sweetened", "Herb-cured fillets in oil", and "Herring in jelly with egg, sweetened", posing a health-and-wellness risk due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Consumers should avoid these products and check batch numbers and best before dates as indicated on the packaging for a possible recall.
