How Police Training in Hesse is Structured - Hesse Police Officers Train for Diverse Scenarios in Rigorous BA Program

In Hesse, police officers undergo a comprehensive three-year dual study program leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree. This rigorous training focuses on equipping officers to handle diverse scenarios and stressful situations without resorting to unnecessary violence.

The curriculum at the Hessian University of Public Management and Security (HoMS) in Gießen, Kassel, Mühlheim am Main, and Wiesbaden combines theory and practice. Officers learn law, police and criminal science, information technology, and social sciences. They also engage in practical training, including shooting, driving, and self-defense.

Deployment training involves role-playing various scenarios, arrests, and dealing with criminals or group violence. Key topics such as stress management and coping with extreme situations are covered in the 4th and 6th semesters. The police aim to create structures that help officers handle memorable experiences effectively.

Currently, an investigation involves 17 officers in Frankfurt, including five females and twelve males aged 24 to 56. They are accused of physical assault during or after arrests of six men between February and April 2025. The allegations include using excessive force and failing to report it. No extremist motives are suspected.

The Hessian Police Trade Union (GdP) suggests improvements in reflection and resilience strengthening in training to better equip officers for the challenges they face daily, particularly in hotspot districts. The police strive to maintain high standards and professionalism in their training and operations.
