Several cities in Hesse, Germany, are grappling with rat infestations, with varying levels of sightings and control measures in place.

New York City has seen an increasing number of rat sightings in recent years. Meanwhile, Offenbach maintains a stable rat population through baiting and control, with 140 sightings reported so far this year. Limburg has been conducting seasonal rat control campaigns for at least 30 years, averaging around 70 to 80 sightings annually.

Wiesbaden faces a significant issue with rats in its sewers, receiving approximately 200 reports of infestations each year. Hanau employs bait and traps in sewers and flood channels, with about 70 reports of rat sightings annually. Frankfurt experiences a relatively constant number of reported infestations, with 227 in 2022 and 205 in 2023. Kassel has received 53 reports this year, with no signs of a growing population.

Hessian municipalities employ a range of control methods, including baits, traps, and campaigns. Darmstadt's green space department has been conducting regular control measures in its parks for decades to prevent rat populations from spiraling out of control. The city has not reported an increase in its sewer population.

Rats are unwanted guests in cities due to their destructive behavior and potential to spread diseases. Municipalities across Hesse are employing various control measures to manage rat populations and prevent infestations from escalating.
