Highlight on Life-Saving CPR Achieved by Buffalo Bills' Damar Hamlin Brings Focus Back to Essential Resuscitation Technique
In an effort to increase community preparedness for cardiac emergencies, UR Medicine and the American Heart Association have placed a mobile CPR training station at Eastview Mall in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region. This innovative training station, known as the HeartSaver Hub, is the region's only mobile hands-only CPR training station, offering on-site instruction by a team of trainers.
The HeartSaver Hub includes a touchscreen video program for brief training, practice, and a 30-second test. It is equipped with a built-in, rubber torso, or manikin, to guide proper hand placement, compression rate, and depth. This interactive learning experience provides real-time feedback to strengthen technique during CPR practice.
The collaboration with the American Heart Association has allowed UR Medicine to provide one of only three mobile CPR training units in the country. Since its introduction last summer, more than 4,000 people have used the CPR training kiosk at Eastview Mall.
The CPR training station is located near the mall entrance to Dick's House of Sport and will remain until January 31. Spencer Rosero, MD of UR Medicine Cardiac Care, emphasizes the importance of bystander response with CPR, stating that it can help save lives.
For those preferring self-directed learning, Monroe County libraries offer learn-at-home kits for CPR training. These kits allow individuals to study and practice CPR skills at their own pace.
For additional local CPR classes and certifications, checking with community organizations like Goodwill of the Finger Lakes or local health departments can be helpful. Special events in the region may also periodically host CPR trainings, such as at sports camps or community centers.
It's concerning to note that less than half of those who need CPR receive it from bystanders before emergency responders arrive. Immediate CPR can double or triple the chances of survival for cardiac arrest victims. Jason Stulb, executive director of the American Heart Association, Rochester, emphasizes the importance of learning CPR, stating that it can make a significant difference in saving lives.

In a time when cardiac arrests occur frequently, with approximately 350,000 happening each year in the U.S. and around 1,000 happening daily, it's crucial for the community to be prepared. Seven in 10 people are unprepared to act in the face of a cardiac emergency, but with initiatives like the mobile CPR training station at Eastview Mall, that number could start to change.
The mobile CPR training station at Eastview Mall, equipped with a touchscreen video program and a built-in manikin, aims to educate individuals on health-and-wellness by providing hands-on training in CPR, a science-based technique that significantly increases the chances of survival for cardiac arrest victims.
In addition to the mobile training station, Monroe County libraries offer learn-at-home kits for those preferring self-directed CPR learning, further promoting health-and-wellness education in the community.
