How a Local Support Group in Rhein-Berg Is Fighting Obesity Together
A local support group, the A-Team, is helping individuals in Rhein-Berg combat obesity through shared experiences and practical advice. Founded in 2022, the group meets regularly at EVK Hospital in Bergisch Gladbach, offering a welcoming space for those struggling with weight-related challenges. The A-Team was created when individuals affected by obesity teamed up with the self-help coordinator at EVK Hospital. Since then, the group has grown to include around 15 to 16 regular participants. Meetings take place every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month on the first floor of the yellow building at Ferrenbergstraße 24. Each session starts with a brief round of introductions. At the end, members answer three set questions to reflect on their progress. The group focuses on mutual support, proper nutrition, and physical activity to combat obesity, which can stem from poor diet, hormonal imbalances, genetic factors, or emotional stress. Beyond emotional support, the A-Team provides guidance for those considering weight-loss surgery and advice on recovery afterward. The group also collaborates with local organizations, including the Selbsthilfekontaktstelle des EVK, Adipositas Verband Deutschland e.V., and the Polizeikommissariat RheinBerg. These partnerships help members access a network of doctors, nutritionists, and obesity specialists. Looking ahead, the A-Team plans to expand its offerings with more lectures and informational events based on members’ interests. First-time attendees are asked to register in advance by emailing [email protected] or calling 02202/122-3132. The A-Team continues to provide a structured and supportive environment for people dealing with obesity. With regular meetings, expert connections, and plans for future events, the group aims to help members make lasting changes. Those interested in joining can reach out for more details before attending.
