How a Service Dog Saved a Veteran’s Life Before a Stroke
Hank Ford, a former U.S. Army and Marine veteran, owes his life to Tommy, a yellow Labrador service dog from Dogs, Inc. The nonprofit organisation provides service dogs to veterans and guide dogs to those with visual impairments. Tommy's alertness one morning saved Ford from a potential stroke.
Ford, who suffers from PTSD and spends much time alone, received Tommy from Dogs, Inc. nine months ago. On that fateful morning, Tommy woke Ford up unusually early and insisted on getting his attention. Ford was in 'A-fib', experiencing an irregular, rapid heartbeat. If not awakened, he would have suffered a massive stroke.
Ford stayed overnight at the hospital and received shock treatment. After recovery, he underwent cardiac ablation and started medication, feeling better since. Meanwhile, Tommy continues his daily routine, waking Ford up around 7 a.m. every day.
Dogs, Inc. will expand its services starting in 2026, providing dogs that can detect changes in blood sugar for people with type one diabetes. For Ford, Tommy is more than just a service dog; he's a lifesaver and a companion. The bond between them is a testament to the incredible impact service dogs can have on people's lives.
