How diet reshapes sleep quality for people with diabetes

A new study has found that diet plays a key role in sleep quality, especially for people with diabetes. Research published in the Journal of Sleep and Metabolic Research shows that low-carbohydrate, high-fat diets may reduce the risk of poor sleep. However, not all high-fat diets have the same effect—some can worsen sleep problems instead.

People with diabetes often struggle with sleep more than those with stable blood glucose levels. Clinical dietitian Raedeh Basiri, part of the research team led by Dr. Maria Neumann, explained that strict dietary control in diabetics can sometimes backfire. While managing blood sugar is important, overly restrictive eating patterns may harm sleep quality.

The study highlights a clear link between diet, blood sugar, and sleep quality. For those with diabetes, careful meal planning may help avoid sleep disturbances caused by strict glucose control. Meanwhile, the wrong balance of fats and proteins can disrupt rest, even in healthy individuals.
