How Not to Ruin a Corporate Event: Biologist Gives Tips on Food and Alcohol

Corporate celebrations often feature rich foods and drinks, but some choices can lead to discomfort or health risks. Experts warn that certain dishes and habits at these events may cause allergic reactions, food poisoning, or even severe hangovers. Simple precautions can help attendees enjoy the occasion without unwanted side effects.

Nuts and seafood are common allergens, so those with sensitivities should check ingredients before eating. Exotic dishes, like raw-fish sushi or unusually spicy Asian meals, can trigger allergic reactions or upset stomachs, especially for first-time tasters. Undercooked meat, rare burgers, or food with an odd smell also pose risks of foodborne illness.

Mayonnaise-based salads left out for more than two hours can spoil and cause food poisoning. Overly fatty or fried foods often lead to stomach heaviness and drowsiness, while creamy cakes may spike blood sugar before causing an energy crash. Mixing different alcohols or combining spirits with fizzy drinks tends to worsen hangovers the next day. Combining alcohol with heavy meals adds extra strain on the liver. For a safer experience, lighter snacks, fresh vegetables, lean meats, and non-alcoholic drinks are better options. Staying hydrated with water throughout the event helps reduce risks and keeps energy levels stable.

Making mindful choices at corporate events can prevent health issues and ensure a more pleasant experience. Avoiding risky foods, moderating alcohol, and opting for lighter meals reduces the chance of allergic reactions, food poisoning, or hangovers. Small adjustments make a noticeable difference in comfort and well-being after the celebration.
