How One Superintendent Transformed a School District Amid Crisis

Dr. Scott V. Nicol has led Ellington Public Schools in Connecticut through a period of notable progress. Under his guidance, the district became the only one in the state to improve student growth and SAT scores during the pandemic. His leadership style combines data-driven decisions with a strong focus on community involvement and open discussion.

Nicol took charge of Ellington Public Schools with a clear philosophy: fostering open dialogue and shared responsibility. In 2019, he launched the Seeds of Civility initiative to promote respectful conversations, an effort that gained attention well beyond the local area.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, his leadership helped the district stand out. While many schools struggled, Ellington was the only district in Connecticut to see overall student growth and SAT scores rise above pre-pandemic levels. Nicol also addressed broader concerns, such as testifying before the state's Appropriations Committee to advocate for gradual changes to the Education Cost Sharing (ECS) funding formula. Beyond academics, Nicol has prioritised student health and safety. He raised concerns about chemicals and ultra-processed foods in the National School Lunch Program and supported the *Ellington Unplugged* wellness initiative. The district also employs armed School Security Officers, including retired law enforcement, to maintain a secure environment. Engagement with the community remains central to his approach. Nicol regularly attends public forums, such as a recent discussion at the Longview Fellowship Center, where topics ranged from teacher recruitment to technology use in early education. His efforts extend to policy reforms and initiatives aimed at rebuilding trust and improving civil discourse.

Nicol's tenure has brought measurable results, from academic gains during a challenging period to broader policy advocacy. His emphasis on data, civic participation, and practical leadership continues to shape Ellington's schools. The district's progress reflects both his strategic vision and a commitment to collaborative problem-solving.
