How Siberians balance fitness goals, spending, and outdoor motivation
Sportswear and sneakers top the list of most popular purchases in Siberia's sports gear category
Experts from Avito Ads and Avito Goods surveyed Russians aged 18 and older to explore how they choose and buy equipment for running and cycling. The findings reveal that nearly half (40%) of Siberian respondents engage in outdoor sports—running, cycling, or rollerblading. Of these, 15% train regularly, while 25% do so occasionally. Another 12% are not yet active but plan to start.
Most people take up outdoor sports to stay in shape (52%) or simply for enjoyment (39%). Nearly a third (33%) cite mental well-being as their primary motivation, seeking stress relief and a way to clear their minds.
When it comes to spending on gear, one in three buyers in the Siberian Federal District (34%) stays within 5,000 rubles per year, while 29% spend between 5,000 and 10,000 rubles. Higher expenditures are less common: 20% allocate 10,000 to 20,000 rubles, and 7% spend 20,000 to 40,000 rubles. The most affluent segment spends around 30,000 rubles annually.
For one in four respondents (27%), new gear serves as motivation to train, while 15% buy in advance to eliminate excuses for procrastination. In total, 42% use purchases as a psychological boost for physical activity.
"In the sports category, equipment often marks the first step toward an active lifestyle—it's bought not only by those already training but also by those just planning to start," commented Yakov Peysakhzon, Director of Avito Ads and Strategic Partnerships.
