How to Keep Your Dog Calm During New Year’s Eve Fireworks
New Year’s Eve fireworks can cause stress and anxiety in household pets, often disrupting their usual routines. To help dogs stay calm, Dr. Alice Utlang, head of Cebu City’s Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries, has shared practical tips for owners ahead of the celebrations.
One of the simplest ways to ease a dog’s nerves is by keeping them indoors with access to familiar, safe spaces. A quiet room or a cosy corner can make them feel more secure as loud noises begin.
Feeding dogs a full meal an hour or two before fireworks start can also promote relaxation. A satisfied stomach may help reduce restlessness during the loudest moments.
For particularly intense displays, temporarily moving dogs to a quieter environment—such as a less exposed part of the house—can be helpful. However, no specific public address has been recommended for a group retreat during New Year’s Eve 2025.
Physical activity plays a key role in managing stress. Exercising dogs three to four hours before fireworks helps tire them out, lowering anxiety levels. Gentle massages on their head, neck, spine, and legs can further soothe them as the noise builds.
After the fireworks end, spending quiet, reassuring time with pets helps them recover. A calm presence and gentle attention can ease any lingering stress from the night’s events.
These steps aim to minimise distress for dogs during fireworks. By preparing in advance and providing comfort, owners can help their pets navigate the noise more easily. The focus remains on creating a secure and calming environment throughout the celebrations.
