Hurrying to Finish Projects in Kakamega to Bolster Employment Opportunities
In the heart of western Kenya, Kakamega County is bustling with activity as it embarks on a transformative journey. The county government, in collaboration with the national government, is fast-tracking the completion of multi-sectoral development projects aimed at improving livelihoods and creating employment opportunities.
One of the most significant initiatives is the construction of a gold refinery in Ikolomani Sub-County. This project, a joint venture between Kakamega County and the national government, is expected to regulate and formalize artisanal mining, generating hundreds of jobs for local youth.
The county's commitment to rural electrification is evident in the electrification of rural households in villages such as Mache B and Sababe, with plans to extend power lines to other areas and install high mast floodlights to enable 24-hour business activities in markets like Chegulo and Ingavira.
Key infrastructure projects include the construction of the Kakamega Level 6 hospital and the completion of Bukhungu Stadium. The latter, currently under construction, is aiming to enhance sporting activities and nurture local talent. The hospital, now under the supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces, is expected to be completed within six months.
The county's agricultural sector is also seeing significant growth. A tea factory is being built in Shinyalu Sub-County, a move aimed at diversifying agricultural processing within the region, in partnership with the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA). The Lutonyi Fish Factory in Lurambi is fully operational, while the Tumbeni Milk Factory in Malava is nearing completion, expected to enhance dairy farming.
In addition, a maize milling plant has been launched in Lurigi Sub-County. The construction of a County Aggregation and Industrial Park in Likuyani is underway, with plans for a textile factory to be established there.
Climate resilience initiatives such as ClimateWork offer green jobs to rural youth and women, promoting sustainable livelihoods. Employment programs like the recruitment of over 110,000 Community Health Promoters support grassroots healthcare and provide jobs.
The Matawa Organic Factory in Mumias West is set to launch this August, further diversifying the county's industrial landscape. The projects span agriculture, manufacturing, health, and infrastructure, collectively aiming to transform livelihoods by enhancing infrastructure, supporting industries, and providing inclusive employment opportunities for diverse groups, including youth and women.
The county government, with commitments like a Ksh 30 million matching fund from the Kakamega Governor, is accelerating electrification and related development efforts. The projects are collectively designed to directly benefit the people of Kakamega County through opportunities that improve their livelihoods.
