I-580 shuts down after mental health crisis on Livermore overpass
A mental health crisis on a Livermore overpass led to a full closure of Interstate 580 on Friday afternoon. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded quickly, shutting down all lanes in both directions just after 2 p.m. The incident began when officers spotted a person in distress on the overpass near Livermore. To ensure safety, the CHP halted traffic completely, causing immediate gridlock. By 4 p.m., eastbound queues stretched past Dublin and Pleasanton, reaching as far as Rowell Ranch.
Drivers were urged to take detours via SR-84 or I-680 to Highway 4. The situation was resolved without further disruption, and all lanes reopened by 3:52 p.m.
The closure lasted just over an hour, but delays persisted well into the afternoon. Traffic gradually cleared after lanes reopened, though residual congestion affected commuters heading into Livermore. No injuries or additional incidents were reported.
