Intimidation, derogatory remarks, and coercion: Vets face escalating stressors
Vet Profession Under Attack: Onslaught of Threats and Aggression
Heldbronn Animal Clinic - Targeted and TerrifiedA distraught owner, for reasons unsound, lays blame on the Heilbronn animal clinic after the death of their beloved cat during transport. The ensuing threats shake the very foundation of their lives. One veterinarian, Marie, recounts her fear-stricken weeks spent holed up in her apartment, seeking refuge in taxi rides to work alone.
No Lone Wolf Incident: Threats and Aggression in the Vet World

Heidi Kübler, president of the state veterinary chamber, acknowledges these incidents, while Dr. Katharina Möhler, a specialist veterinarian for small and pet animals, bears witness to abuse she faced at the beginning of her career. "A disgruntled customer cursed me in the waiting room and threatened me," she recalls, regarding a routine procedure that, to her, was both standard and necessary.
A Climate of Anger and Frustration
Over the years, a pandemic of impatience, demands, and hostility has pervaded the veterinary world. The cloak of anonymity afforded by the internet, enabling individuals to lash out without consequence, has only added fuel to the fire. "More verbal harassment stems from this anonymity. It gives people the impression that they can say whatever they want without thinking," explains Helene Enns, another veterinarian at Heilbronn.
The Emergency Room: Vets On the Frontlines
The emergency room sees the brunt of this assault. Situations have escalated at several large Anicura clinics in the region, forcing doctors to prioritize patients just like their human counterparts. "This doesn't sit well with some pet owners, who may resort to trade or emotional blackmail in their desperation," laments Kübler.
One harrowing story involves a dog owner who threatened violence when the clinic failed to treat their pet immediately. The owner was clearly unfit to make decisions for their animal but turned their frustration on the staff.
Disappointed expectations and financial constraints often exacerbate hostilities. "Many owners have not taken out health insurance for their pets, leaving them to foot the bill for costly treatments," explains Dr. Möhler.
Psychological Toll on Practitioners
The toll on veterinarians can be immense. Threatening situations often leave young professionals and assistants struggling with anxiety and stress. In some cases, aggression from pet owners has prompted vets to leave the profession entirely. "We support each other to better navigate these difficult encounters," says Möhler. The Heilbronn animal clinic now boasts a three-person complaint-management system for such incidents.
Safety Measures: Protecting the Protection of Pets
To safeguard its staff, some larger animal clinics have installed escape rooms, while others employ emergency buttons connected to security services. Employee safety routes have been taken into account during construction at some clinics, giving staff an added measure of protection.
Resources for Veterinarians: Adjusting to Modern Aggression
Since June 1, an emergency hotline has been available for employees in the veterinary field. Stressful work experiences can be a heavy burden, and this resource offers daily support between 20 and 22 hours. Training for de-escalation and stress management is also increasingly offered, helping staff better navigate incendiary encounters.
"These training sessions are crucial, but they don't always prevent tense situations," says Dr. Möhler.
Facing the Future: Perseverance, Collaboration, and Love for Animals
Despite the adversity, there remains a spark of hope, unity, and a deep love for animals that reignites the passion for this challenging profession. For Helene Enns, it is the long-standing bonds formed with clients and their pets that provide inspiration. "When a pet is too far gone, we walk through the journey with them and their owners, often overcome with emotion," she shares.
Katharina Möhler finds solace in the seemingly miraculous recoveries of animals. "Seeing smiles on the faces of these owners when their pets revive instills a sense of purpose and joy," she says, reminding us that animating love for animals is a powerful driving force in a profession plagued by so much darkness.
- In the veterinary profession, practitioners like Dr. Katharina Möhler are confronted with hostile encounters and even threats to their mental health, as a climate of anger and frustration pervades the field.
- The science of workplace-wellness and health-and-wellness is increasingly important for veterinarians, as mental-health issues stemming from these aggressive encounters can be immense, potentially leading some practitioners to leave the field.
