Investigating suspected drowning incident in Keaukaha

A coroner's inquest has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the death of Greg Durocher, a 51-year-old man from Castle Rock, Colorado, who was involved in a possible drowning incident at Waiolena Beach Park in Keaukaha, Hilo.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon at around 12:28 p.m., with South Hilo patrol officers and the Hawaii Fire Department responding to the scene. According to reports, Durocher was participating in scuba diving lessons with his family at the time of the incident.

Shortly after returning to shore, Durocher became unresponsive. The dive master and Durocher's family immediately initiated CPR. Medics continued treatment on Durocher and transported him to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after admittance.

No foul play is suspected in Durocher's death. The investigation is currently ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Elieser Quinones at (808) 935-3311 or [email protected].

While drowning is relatively rare among experienced divers, it remains a leading cause of scuba diving accidents. Understanding the common causes and safety measures can help prevent such incidents.

Common causes of drowning during scuba diving include panic, loss of buoyancy control, entrapment, equipment failure, and loss of consciousness underwater due to hypoxia, decompression sickness, or other medical issues. Dangerous breath-holding behaviors can also lead to hypoxic blackout, causing loss of consciousness and drowning.

Safety measures to prevent drowning in scuba diving involve proper training, the buddy system, regular equipment checks, maintaining calm underwater behavior, controlled ascent rates and decompression stops, and proficiency in emergency procedures such as rescue breathing and CPR.

Prompt action if drowning occurs includes immediate rescue, administering rescue breaths, CPR if necessary, and urgent medical evaluation.

The loss of Greg Durocher serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety measures and proper procedures when engaging in scuba diving activities. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.

  1. The investigation into Greg Durocher's death is broadening its scope, including a focus on the health-and-wellness aspect, as his sudden unresponsiveness occurred during scuba diving lessons.
  2. Amidst general news about Durocher's tragic death, it's crucial to emphasize the importance of fitness-and-exercise precautions, such as maintaining buoyancy control, understanding safety measures, and regular equipment checks, to prevent similar accidents during scuba diving.
