James Van Der Beek lets New Year's resolutions rest until spring - James Van Der Beek delays resolutions until spring amid cancer battle

Actor James Van Der Beek has spoken openly about delaying his New Year’s resolutions until spring. The decision comes as he continues his battle with stage three colon cancer, diagnosed in November 2024. Instead of pushing himself during winter, he plans to focus on rest and recovery before tackling new goals when the weather warms up.

Van Der Beek has questioned the tradition of making resolutions in January, calling it an illogical time for fresh starts. He argues that nature itself is dormant in winter, making spring a far more natural moment for new beginnings. His plan is to wait until March, when flowers bloom and the days grow longer, before setting his intentions.

The actor had to cancel a Dawson’s Creek reunion in New York City last September due to his health. Since then, he has been prioritising recovery, choosing rest over the usual pressure of January resolutions. His approach has found support among fellow actors, including Alyssa Milano and Odette Annable, who agree that spring offers a better time for renewal. Rather than forcing change in the coldest months, Van Der Beek intends to align his goals with the season’s energy. He believes warmer weather and the return of birds and blossoms will provide the right conditions for a meaningful fresh start.

Van Der Beek’s decision reflects a shift away from traditional New Year’s resolutions. By waiting until spring, he aims to give himself the best chance at success while respecting his body’s need for healing. His public stance has sparked conversation about when—and how—people choose to set personal goals.
