Consul General Akira MutoAkira Muto, our Consul General, graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1985. Over the years, he served at Tokyo's Embassies in Washington D.C. and Moscow, and held roles such as Director for Free Trade Agreement & Economic Partnership, Intelligence & Analysis, Russian Affairs, Foreign Policy Coordination, among others. In 2012, he served as Consul General of Japan in Boston, and later, as Deputy Director General for European Affairs Bureau, Ambassador (2014-15); and in the National Security Secretariat (2015-16). He was also a Minister at the Embassy of Japan in the U.S. (Global Affiliate Visiting Scholar, Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center, Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, Stanford University) from 2018 to 2019. He took on the role as Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles in 2019.
Yuko KaifuBefore joining our site in January 2016, Yuko Kaifu spent time at MUFG Union Bank, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ's corporate bank, where she was in charge of media relations, internal/external publications, and CSR activities for both the Japanese and Japanese American communities, as well as US-Japan relations. Kaifu started her career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. Her previous assignments included the Embassy of Japan in Canada, North American Affairs Bureau, Economic Cooperation Bureau, Foreign Policy Bureau, and Cultural Affairs Department. As a Deputy Director in Tokyo, she was also an official interpreter for Her Majesty the Empress, the Prime Minister, and the Foreign Minister of Japan.
