Judith Holofernes reinvents herself after losing her singing voice to a rare disorder

Judith Holofernes, once the lead singer of Wir sind Helden, can no longer perform as a musician. A neurological voice disorder diagnosed in 2017 forced her to abandon her solo career. Since then, she has turned to writing and podcasting as new creative outlets.

Holofernes first noticed problems with her voice in 2017. Doctors later confirmed a neurological condition, though its exact cause remains uncertain. Some suspect a possible link to meningitis she may have had that same year.

She explored multiple treatments but found no cure. Over time, she learned to manage her condition by resting her voice and avoiding strain. By 2019, it became clear she could no longer sing professionally.

Since stepping away from music, Holofernes has reinvented herself. She now writes essays, hosts podcasts, and creates artworks funded by monthly contributions from supporters. Her latest book, Hummelhirn (Bumblebee Brain), reflects on her childhood and experiences. Despite her voice disorder, she continues to produce creative work in new forms.

Holofernes no longer performs but remains active in the arts. Her shift to writing and podcasting has allowed her to stay connected with audiences. The release of Hummelhirn marks another step in her evolving career beyond music.
