Komi Republic Launches Urgent Review of Pediatric Palliative Care Services
Authorities in the Komi Republic are stepping up efforts to improve pediatric palliative care. A series of interagency visits will assess support services for severely ill children across the region. The initiative follows a November 2025 meeting between regional leaders and children's rights advocates.
The visits were ordered by Rostislav Goldshtein, head of Komi, after discussions with Tatyana Kozlova, the region's Children's Rights Commissioner. Kozlova and Yelena Tikhonova, the chief pediatric palliative care specialist, will lead the inspections. Their focus includes evaluating mobile care teams, inpatient facilities, family support methods, and individual medical cases.
The first stop is the Kochponsky Republican Boarding School on March 17. Further visits are planned for the Ukhta Children's Hospital on April 21 and the Vorkuta Children's Hospital in summer 2026. These inspections aim to ensure all 188 children in Komi requiring palliative care receive proper support.
Meanwhile, construction of a new wing at the Republican Children's Clinical Hospital in Syktyvkar is almost finished. This facility will host the region's first dedicated pediatric units, including a palliative care department. The project aligns with President Vladimir Putin's call for better access to palliative services, stronger regional infrastructure, and increased involvement from non-profits.
The visits will check how well existing services meet the needs of families with severely ill children. Once complete, the new hospital wing in Syktyvkar will provide specialized care previously unavailable in the region. Officials hope these measures will raise standards and fill gaps in pediatric palliative support.
