Korean diaspora’s epic journey unfolds in Kazakhstan’s touring play *Life – History of Unity*

A theatrical production celebrating the Korean community in Kazakhstan is touring the country this year. Life – History of Unity marks the 30th anniversary of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan and first premiered in 2022. The play blends dance, music, and drama to trace the community’s journey over nearly a century.

The story begins with the 1937 forced relocation of nearly 172,000 Koreans from the Russian Far East to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Archival documents and personal accounts shape the narrative, highlighting both hardship and resilience. At its heart stands the character Girl-History, played by Anna Tsoy, who also serves as the theatre’s chief ballet master and choreographer. This figure embodies the growth of the Korean community and its deep ties to the Kazakh land.

The tour coincides with a milestone year for Kazakhstan’s Assembly of the People. Through song, dance, and historical reflection, Life – History of Unity connects past struggles with present-day cultural pride. Performances will continue across the country in the coming months.
