Lakes for Swimming in Brandenburg: Identifying the Clear Pools for a Swim, and Those Prohibited for Bathing

Article: The State of Bathing Spots in Baden-Württemberg, July 2025

In the picturesque region of Baden-Württemberg, popular bathing spots are a summer staple for locals and tourists alike. However, recent years have seen some lakes facing issues with microbiological contamination, leading to bathing bans or advisories.

As of July 2025, one such spot remains closed: the Sunthauser See in Bad Duerrheim, which has been off-limits for bathing since 2021 due to high levels of contamination. On a more positive note, the Kollerinsel gravel pit in Brühl (Rhein-Neckar district) no longer has bathing restrictions.

Four other bathing spots have achieved sufficient quality: the Badesee Buch in Rainau (Ostalb district), the Baggersee Eggenstein in Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, the Badesee Hermuthausen in Ingelfingen, and the Stausee in Mulfingen (both Hohenlohe district).

However, rain can flush in germs, potentially affecting the water quality of lakes in Baden-Württemberg. This year, a bathing ban has been imposed on the Neuravensburger Weiher in Wangen im Allgaeu due to abnormal water samples. Similarly, high levels of fecal bacteria have led to a bathing ban for the Surfsee Obersulmetingen in Laupheim.

The Neumühlsee in Waldenburg (Hohenlohe district) has a general warning for a strong blue algae development. Areas with visible streaks in the Neumühlsee should be avoided, especially for children and toddlers. Blue algae in the Neumühlsee can irritate the skin and pose a risk of poisoning if algae-containing water is swallowed for several days in a row.

The Metzisweilerweiher in Bad Wurzach is marked red on the map due to renewed "microbial abnormalities". The bathing ban has been extended, and the situation will be reassessed in spring 2026 based on data from the 2025 bathing season. The ministry strongly advises against swimming in rivers, as they are not suitable for swimming and not monitored.

Despite these challenges, many lakes in Baden-Württemberg remain clean and safe for swimming. Strandbad Konstanz, located on Lake Constance (Bodensee) in Baden-Württemberg, is described as very clean and well-maintained with full amenities and no reported bathing restrictions[1]. No recent reports suggest bathing water quality problems or closures for major monitored lakes in Baden-Württemberg.

The Baden-Württemberg bathing water map, published by the State Health Office, provides information about the water quality of all 311 regularly monitored bathing waters in the country[2]. Local policies are supporting healthier outdoor leisure environments, indirectly supporting water recreation safety[4].

For precise, real-time water quality statuses or specific restrictions at other monitored lakes in Baden-Württemberg, direct consultation of official state environmental or health agency websites would be required, as the publicly indexed sources do not provide detailed comprehensive bathing water quality assessments or restriction lists for all monitored lakes.

  1. Ensuring a healthy and safe environment for both locals and tourists, the strides made in environmental-science and water-quality monitoring have become essential in maintaining pristine bathing spots, such as the Strandbad Konstanz.
  2. In the realm of health-and-wellness and fitness-and-exercise, it's crucial to be aware of the current status of bathing spots when planning outdoor activities, as certain lakes, like the Metzisweilerweiher in Bad Wurzach, may still face microbial issues.
  3. To preserve the overall cleanliness and sustainability of Baden-Württemberg's bathing spots, precise nutrition plays a crucial role in reducing the presence of harmful microorganisms, particularly when it comes to proper sewage treatment and waste management.
