Life Flight Network Brings Critical Air Medical Services to Hawaii Island

Emergency air medical services have expanded to Hawaii Island with the arrival of Life Flight Network. The organization began operations on 7 November 2025, opening bases in Kona and Hilo, with a third in Waimea planned for later in the year. The move follows a partnership with the Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation, which funded a new Airbus H145 helicopter for the island's residents.

Life Flight Network was founded in 1978 in Portland, Oregon, with a mission to connect critically ill or injured patients with life-saving care. Over the decades, it has grown to serve more than 15 million people across Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Nevada. Now, Hawaii Island joins that list, marking the network's first expansion into the Pacific.

The organization brings intensive care directly to patients using advanced aircraft and highly trained medical teams. In just three months on Hawaii Island, crews have already transported over 140 patients. To support long-term operations, Life Flight Network has invested over $37 million in aircraft, equipment, staff, and facilities.

Local hospitals, emergency services, and community partners are working alongside the network to strengthen the island's healthcare system. Chief Executive Officer Ben Clayton has emphasized collaboration as key to improving emergency response times and patient outcomes.

The new bases in Kona, Hilo, and the upcoming Waimea location will provide faster access to critical care for residents and visitors. With a dedicated helicopter and specialized teams, Life Flight Network aims to reduce transport delays and save more lives across Hawaii Island.
