To protect him from potentially fatal exposure to germs, he was immediately placed in a sterile "bubble" after birth, equipped with disinfected diapers, bottles, medical equipment, and even sterilized holy water for a quick baptism[4].

David's parents, Carol Ann and David Joseph Vetter Jr, were told that any male child they conceived would have a 50/50 chance of being born with the same disease[6]. Despite this, David managed to defy expectations, becoming a walking, talking toddler by one year[7].

As each avenue for a cure closed off, David's bubble became more permanent[1]. In 1983, researchers announced a way to transplant bone marrow with a half-match, potentially allowing David to leave his bubble[8]. However, the transplant from David's sister contained traces of Epstein Barr virus, which caused hundreds of cancerous tumors in David's body, leading to his death at the age of 12 in 1984[1].

David's life led to dozens of medical breakthroughs, including the confirmation that a virus can cause cancer and the mapping of the genetic origin of SCID[9]. His immunologist, Raphael Wilson, proposed a bone marrow transplant as a potential treatment for David, which had never been performed before[10].

Today, babies with SCID can be given stem cell therapies that can all but guarantee their survival[11]. While SCID and other primary immunodeficiency diseases still affect individuals, advances in diagnosis and treatment have dramatically improved outcomes and reduced the need for life in complete isolation. It is now rare for patients to need extreme isolation like David's bubble[1].
