More Seniors Use Silbernetz Offer to Combat Loneliness - Loneliness crisis drives 35% surge in calls to German seniors’ hotline
A German charity, Silbernetz, is witnessing a sharp rise in calls from older people grappling with loneliness. The charity, which operates a free hotline for those over 60, recorded 4,654 calls in Schleswig-Holstein last year—a 35% increase from 2024. For some callers, the service is their sole regular contact with others.
The organization was founded in Berlin in 2009 under the name Silbernetes e.V. Since 2014, it has provided a dedicated hotline (0800 4 70 80 90) where trained volunteers listen, converse, and offer support daily from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Many callers simply seek conversation, with 95% reaching out to chat. Others discuss physical health issues (75%), loneliness (50%), or share positive feedback (45%).
Beyond phone calls, Silbernetz connects seniors with local services and activities. It also pairs individuals for 'telephone friendships,' giving them an opportunity to build deeper, regular connections. Some users call every day, relying on the service as their primary social lifeline. The growing demand underscores how many older adults face isolation. In 2025 alone, Schleswig-Holstein saw a significant increase in calls, mirroring wider trends across Germany.
Silbernetz continues to expand its support as loneliness among seniors persists. The hotline remains free and accessible, offering both immediate conversation and long-term companionship. With more people reaching out, the charity's role in connecting older adults to community and care has never been more crucial.
