Lord Julian Fellowes retires from House of Lords after spinal health battle

Lord Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey, has announced his retirement from the House of Lords. The 75-year-old peer, who was appointed in 2011, will formally step down next month. His decision follows years of managing a recurring spinal condition that has left him mostly confined to a wheelchair.

Fellowes first underwent surgery for spinal stenosis around 40 years ago. At the time, he recovered well, but the condition returned a few years ago, requiring another operation. This time, his recovery has not been as complete as it was in his younger years.

Appointed to the Upper House by David Cameron's Coalition government, Fellowes chose the title Lord Fellowes of West Stafford—a nod to the Dorset area where he lives. Though his mobility is now limited, he has stated he does not consider himself unlucky. Despite his condition, he has remained active in public life until now. The peer has submitted formal written notice of his retirement, but he has declined to discuss his reasons for leaving. His departure will take effect next month, marking the end of over a decade of service in Parliament.

Fellowes' retirement will reduce the number of working peers in the House of Lords. His departure follows a long career in both politics and entertainment. The exact date of his final exit from the Upper House has been confirmed for next month.
