What police officers of tomorrow must be able to do - Lower Saxony Police Overhaul Recruitment with Tougher Tests and Digital Assessments

The Lower Saxony police force has overhauled its recruitment process for 2026. Developed with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the new system introduces tougher physical tests, digital assessments, and a stronger focus on democratic values. Officials hope these changes will attract more suitable candidates while clearing up misunderstandings about the job.

The updated selection now kicks off with a forward roll followed by a demanding obstacle course. Applicants must sprint, crawl, and climb while racing against the clock. One key challenge involves balancing across an upside-down bench and dragging a 70-kilogram dummy—all within strict time limits. Failure to meet these targets means instant disqualification.

The revised recruitment process is now in effect, combining physical endurance, mental sharpness, and ethical alignment. With stricter tests and digital outreach, Lower Saxony police aim to build a more capable and diverse workforce. The changes reflect a broader push to modernise law enforcement training across Germany.
