Mainz secures extended funding for vital midwifery centres until 2028

Midwifery centres in Mainz will receive extended state funding until the end of 2028. The decision comes as local authorities highlight their importance for families in the region. Additional financial support will also address rising operational costs.

Rhineland-Palatinate has backed 12 midwifery stations or centres across eight districts since the programme began. These include Rhein-Neckar-Kreis, Mainz-Bingen, Trier, Koblenz, Altenkirchen, Westerwaldkreis, Südliche Weinstraße, and Donnersbergkreis.

In Mainz, the city's social affairs commissioner, Jana Schmöller, called the local centre an 'indispensable resource' for expectant and new parents. Despite budget pressures, the city has committed to maintaining its support. From 2026, state funding for the Mainz centre will rise by up to 20 percent. The increase aims to cover higher expenses and ensure services remain available. However, the neighbouring Mainz-Bingen district has yet to meet its financial obligations for the current year.

The extended funding secures the future of midwifery services in Mainz until late 2028. Higher state contributions will help stabilise operations, though local districts must still fulfil their funding promises. Families in the region will continue to rely on these centres for essential care.
