Makin Club launches Kuwaiti lentil dish competition in support of cancer patients and survivors

A cooking competition in Kuwait will highlight the link between nutrition and cancer prevention this December. The Makin Club, part of the National Cancer Awareness Campaign (CAN), is hosting an event to promote healthy eating while supporting cancer patients and survivors. The centrepiece will be a contest for the best traditional Kuwaiti lentil dish, featuring yellow lentils for their high nutritional benefits.

The event takes place on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at Heritage Sea Day Village, starting at 3:00 pm. It marks the close of the Makin Club’s 2025 season, which included health and community initiatives focused on cancer care. Alongside the cooking competition, there will be an awareness exhibition and a presentation by Chef Munira Al-Hai, who will prepare a traditional dish.

Dr. Iman Al-Shammari, Secretary of CAN and Head of the Makin Club Committee, stressed the importance of combining health education with proper nutrition for cancer patients. The competition also addresses dietary risks, as high intake of saturated fats and processed meats has been linked to increased cancer rates. In Kuwait, colon cancer remains a major concern, with 289 cases recorded in 2020, making it the most common cancer in men and the second most common in women.

The Makin Club’s initiative aims to raise awareness about nutrition while offering support to those affected by cancer. Yellow lentils, chosen for their health benefits, will take centre stage in the competition. The event reinforces the connection between diet and long-term health, particularly in cancer prevention and recovery.
