Man fractures larynx after suppressing a violent sneeze by pinching his nose

A young man fractured his larynx after trying to stop a sneeze by pinching his nose and exhaling forcefully. Doctors have since warned that holding in a sneeze can cause serious injuries to the ears, blood vessels, sinuses, and even the eyes. The incident occurred when the patient blocked his nose and mouth to suppress a powerful sneeze. Immediately after, he heard a loud cracking noise in his throat. His neck and face quickly began to swell, prompting him to seek medical help.

At Pushkino Hospital, doctors examined him and found a fracture in the cartilaginous part of his larynx. They also diagnosed subcutaneous emphysema, a condition where air becomes trapped under the skin. Otolaryngologist Mikhail Dorosh later explained that the force of the sneeze, combined with the blocked nose, had torn the connective tissues in the man’s throat. The patient was treated with hormonal medications and antibiotics to reduce inflammation. He was also placed on strict bed rest to allow the damaged tissues to recover fully.

The case highlights the risks of suppressing a sneeze, which can lead to severe complications. Doctors advise letting sneezes occur naturally to avoid potential harm to the throat, ears, and other vulnerable areas.
