Man with Mental Health Issues Stabs Three, Including Two Students, in Miaoli City
A man, surnamed Chiu, stabbed three people, including two 11-year-old students, near a convenience store in Miaoli City yesterday. The attacker, who had mental health issues, was subdued by police after resisting arrest. Miaoli County Commissioner Chung Tung-chin visited the injured at the hospital and raised concerns about the attacker's release from prison earlier this year.
The incident occurred at 3:46pm near Jhongjheng Road. Chiu, a former inmate, stabbed one girl, surnamed Ting, in the chest, and another, surnamed Hsu, suffered minor injuries. A man, surnamed Lin, was stabbed in the abdomen and back and was still being treated at a hospital.
Chiu was released from prison in March after serving eight years for a previous stabbing incident in 2015. Despite his mental health problems, he did not receive appropriate treatment during his detention. Miaoli County Commissioner Hsieh Fu-hung, who attended to the victims, emphasized the need for Chiu to receive mental health treatment.
Chiu resisted arrest and was subdued with a stun gun. He is now in police custody. The two girls are recovering, with one in a stable condition. The attacker's mental health status and the lack of treatment during his imprisonment have raised concerns, with local commissioners calling for better care for such individuals.
