Mannheim Kindergarten Earns Top Certification for Healthy Food Education
The Weylstraße municipal kindergarten in Mannheim has earned BEKI certification for its dedication to healthy eating and food education. The recognition comes with the 'smiling pear' emblem, awarded by the Nutrition Forum for the Rhein-Neckar District. Officials see this as a key move in promoting lifelong nutrition awareness among young children.
BEKI, or Baden-Württemberg's Conscious Children's Nutrition initiative, has supported schools and kindergartens since the 1980s. The programme focuses on child-friendly food literacy, social eating experiences, and seasonal produce. It also covers hygiene, balanced meal planning, and training for educators.
The Weylstraße kindergarten integrates healthy food into daily routines. Children take part in breakfast buffets, cooking projects, and sensory food activities. Parents are involved too, with workshops on healthy packed lunches and low-sugar drinks.
Katja Hörner, the kindergarten's director, has welcomed the certification. She aims to keep inspiring children through hands-on healthy food experiences. Andreas Müller, head of Mannheim's childcare services, also highlights the role of good nutrition in early development.
While the exact number of certified kindergartens in Baden-Württemberg isn't available, facilities in Mannheim, Biberach, and Bad Dürrheim have already received BEKI recognition.
The certification reinforces the kindergarten's efforts to teach children about balanced diets. Parents and educators will continue working together to build healthy eating habits. The initiative sets a foundation for long-term well-being in Mannheim's youngest residents.
