Mazzei Family Unveils Rare Chianti Classico Made from 100% Sangiovese

The Mazzei family has unveiled Ipsus 2021, a limited-edition Chianti Classico Gran Selezione made entirely from Sangiovese. Only 6,000 bottles were produced, marking another step in Giovanni Mazzei’s mission to redefine perceptions of the region’s wines. This single-vineyard release comes from the Il Caggio estate, acquired by the family in 2006, and builds on a winemaking legacy stretching back six centuries.

The Mazzei family’s roots in Chianti run deep, with records dating to 1398 when an ancestor first mentioned the wine region in a letter. Their latest creation, Ipsus, was first crafted in 2015 and released in 2020, quickly earning praise from critics and collectors. Giovanni Mazzei designed the wine to reflect the true character of Chianti Classico’s terroir, using grapes from the Il Caggio vineyard, which sits at 1,050 to 1,150 feet above sea level. The site’s deep, well-drained soils, ideal exposure, and natural airflow provide perfect conditions for Sangiovese.

The release of Ipsus 2021 reinforces the Mazzei family’s commitment to quality and tradition. With just 6,000 bottles available, the wine highlights the potential of single-vineyard Sangiovese from Chianti Classico. Its distinct profile and careful production reflect both the estate’s unique conditions and Giovanni Mazzei’s vision for the future of the region.
