Measles Outbreak in Pacific Northwest Prompts Revaccination Call for 1960s Vaccine Recipients

A measles outbreak in the Pacific Northwest has led to over 50 cases in the Clark County, Washington, area. Health officials urge revaccination for those who received an early measles vaccine in the 1960s, as it may not provide sufficient lifelong immunity.

Measles vaccination is the safest way to prevent the disease's spread, especially during an outbreak. Those born before 1957 who are not immune should have two doses of the MMR vaccine, 28 days apart. This includes individuals who received the killed version of the measles vaccine or are unsure about their vaccination history. Local health departments can provide advice on vaccination necessity.

The outbreak has sparked a surge in vaccinations. From January 13 to February 2, over six times as many people were vaccinated compared to the same period last year. This is crucial as vaccination rates in children in the area are lower than average. Most infants receive their first MMR vaccine at a year old and a second dose between the ages of 4 and 6. However, infants vaccinated before their first birthday should still receive two doses after.

Revaccination is crucial for those who received the early measles vaccine in the 1960s to ensure effective lifelong immunity against measles, mumps, and rubella. The current outbreak serves as a reminder of the importance of vaccination in preventing the spread of disease. Health officials encourage everyone to check their vaccination records and follow local health department advice.
