Malcolm-Jamal Warner Dies in Tragic Accident
Malcolm-Jamal Warner, beloved actor known for his role in "The Bill Cosby Show," passed away on July 20, 2025, due to accidental drowning at Cocles Beach in Costa Rica.
Warner was on vacation with his family when the incident occurred. He was swimming with his 8-year-old daughter and a friend when they were caught in a strong rip current. A group of surfers and a volunteer lifeguard on the beach intervened, with one surfer using his board to bring Warner's daughter to safety and the lifeguard pulling both Warner and another surfer to shore.
CPR was started immediately on the beach by a doctor who wished to remain anonymous. The doctor, along with two other tourists who identified themselves as doctors, attempted to revive Warner using a defibrillator provided by the Red Cross. However, despite about 45 minutes of CPR, Warner showed no vital signs and was declared dead at a local clinic. An autopsy later confirmed the cause of death as asphyxia by submersion, ruling the drowning accidental.
As the news of Warner's death spread, his body was identified by the medical examiner and handed over to his family the following day. The incident occurred at a beach with few people and rough waters, making it a challenging rescue mission.
One of the surfers, who was an untrained helper, was also present and had attempted a rescue. He was found lying exhausted on the beach after the incident. The doctor who attempted the rescue did not specify whether the person he saved was Warner.
Warner's eight-year-old daughter was not in the water during the incident. The family was on vacation, and Warner was playing with his daughter on the shore before going into the sea with a friend.
