Midwifery's significance within healthcare industries

On September 24, 2025, at 5:00 PM, the History Workshop Göttingen is hosting a neighborhood tour titled 'Medicine in National Socialism - The Role of Midwives.' The tour, led by Cornelia Krapp, a midwife at the History Workshop Göttingen, will provide an insightful exploration of the significant role midwives played during the period of National Socialism in Göttingen. The tour will commence at the gate of Goßlerstraße / Corner Kate-Hamburger-Weg and will traverse the grounds of the old university clinic between Goßlerstraße and Humboldtallee. This journey will offer a comprehensive introduction to the history of the Göttingen clinic during National Socialism, shedding light on both the positive and the darker aspects of this period. One of the key topics that the tour will cover is the legal requirement in Nazi Germany, established in 1938 under the regime of Adolf Hitler, that a midwife must be present at every birth. This regulation was a reflection of the importance midwives held in right-wing ideologies, as they were believed to help fix women to their maternal role. However, the tour will also delve into the troubling topic of forced sterilizations in the women's clinic. It will discuss the unwanted pregnancies of forced laborers in Nazi Germany and the subsequent births of their children in hospitals, camps, and individual accommodations. The tour will also highlight the exploitation of pregnant women from Eastern Europe, who were used for scientific purposes, serving as 'housewives' for medical training. Throughout the tour, the Midwifery Act's emphasis on respecting the right of women to self-determination will be contrasted with these practices. Today, midwives emphasize that their professional ethics cannot be reconciled with right-wing thinking. The tour is part of the exhibition 'On the Trail of European Forced Labor. South Lower Saxony 1939-1945.' For more information about the exhibition, visit www.zwangsarbeit-in-niedersachsen.eu. Participation in the tour is free of charge, but donations are welcome. This is an opportunity to learn about a crucial chapter in Göttingen's history and to support the ongoing work of the History Workshop Göttingen. Don't miss out on this enlightening and thought-provoking event.
