Military Hospitals Earn Top Medicare Ratings for Patient Discharge Excellence
Fifteen Defense Health Agency (DHA) facilities have earned top marks for their patient discharge processes. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) awarded them five-star ratings based on patient feedback. This recognition highlights the DHA’s commitment to clear communication and thorough care planning.
The assessment covered the period from October 2023 to September 2024, with results updated in July 2025. Among the honoured sites are the 60th Medical Group at Travis Air Force Base and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
The CMS ratings relied on patient responses from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. This survey measures satisfaction with discharge instructions and follow-up care. Facilities were judged on how well they prepared patients for recovery after leaving the hospital.
Dr. Kristen Atterbury, the DHA’s chief nursing officer, stressed the importance of clear roles and medication education during discharge. She noted that these steps help patients manage their health after hospitalization. The DHA’s approach aligns with broader goals: supporting military readiness, improving recovery, and streamlining healthcare services. Dr. Paul Cordts, deputy director for medical affairs at the DHA, added that smooth patient transitions build trust in the military health system. He explained that effective discharge planning also contributes to operational readiness across the armed forces.
The five-star ratings confirm the DHA’s success in patient discharge planning. Facilities like Travis Air Force Base and Walter Reed now serve as models for clear communication and post-hospital care. The results reflect ongoing efforts to strengthen military healthcare standards.
