In a significant move to combat Alzheimer's disease, a $1 million AI competition named the Alzheimer's Insights AI Prize has been launched by Bill Gates through his foundation, Gates Ventures [1][2][3]. The competition aims to accelerate breakthroughs in Alzheimer's disease and related dementia research by leveraging agentic AI—AI capable of independent planning, reasoning, and action.

The competition is organised by the Alzheimer's Disease Data Initiative (AD Data Initiative) and aims to spur global teams to develop innovative AI tools that can analyse Alzheimer's data and accelerate discoveries [1][3]. The prize will be awarded to the team that develops the most original and effective AI-powered agent for Alzheimer’s research [3].

The winning tool will be freely released on the AD Data Initiative's cloud-based Alzheimer's Disease workbench—a secure platform facilitating global data sharing and analysis among researchers at no cost [2][3]. This collaborative platform enables interoperability with major Alzheimer's data sources worldwide, promoting data sharing to accelerate research progress [2].

The competition unfolds in three rounds, with the final submissions due by March 16, 2026, allowing teams time to refine their approaches using the AD workbench resources [2]. Gregorz Moore, an advisor, noted that the burden of Alzheimer's disease is increasing and no effective new treatments have been seen yet [4]. It is estimated that around 55 million people currently suffer from dementia, and this number could triple by 2050 [4].

This initiative is part of a growing push to use advanced AI technologies to tackle complex diseases by enabling innovative, data-driven research solutions accessible globally [1][2][3][4]. Google DeepMind has already gained recognition for its AlphaFold model, which predicts protein structures. The competition will commence on August 19, followed by qualifying rounds in San Diego in December and the final in Copenhagen in March.

The developed tool will be made freely available to scientists worldwide through a cloud platform, with the hope that AI will play a significant role in the integration and acceleration of Alzheimer's disease research. Gates's motivation is personal, stemming from his father's death from Alzheimer’s, and reflects a broader effort to harness AI to transform the pace and scale of dementia research [1][2].
