Mixed-breed dogs dominate Germany’s 2025 registration charts amid health warnings
Mixed-breed dogs topped Germany’s registration lists in 2025, with 92,976 new entries. The Labrador followed as the most popular classic breed, recording 13,109 registrations. Meanwhile, animal welfare experts raised concerns over the rising demand for fashionable breeds with health risks.
The annual rankings from TASSO revealed shifting preferences among German dog owners. While the Labrador remained the leading classic breed, mixed-breed dogs dominated overall. The German Shepherd secured fourth place nationwide but outpaced the Labrador in Saxony-Anhalt.
The French Bulldog and Australian Shepherd held steady in sixth and seventh positions. New to the top 10 were the Dachshund and Toy Poodle, replacing the Maltese and Havanese. The Jack Russell Terrier also made the list, claiming ninth place. TASSO warned that surging interest in breeds prone to health issues could increase animal suffering. The organisation views the popularity list as an early indicator of irresponsible breeding and illegal puppy trading. Heike Weber, TASSO’s animal welfare head, called for stricter laws, including nationwide mandatory identification and registration for all dogs.
The 2025 data highlights ongoing trends in dog ownership, with mixed breeds leading registrations. TASSO’s warnings point to potential welfare risks tied to fashionable breeds. The organisation continues to push for stronger regulations to protect animals from exploitation.
