Mobile Student Lab Brings Hands-On Food Science to Over 1,000 Students
Hochschule Niederrhein's Mobile Student Lab has marked its first year with over 1,000 participants. The travelling science workshop brings hands-on food and nutrition experiments directly to schools. Students get to explore real-world topics in compact, interactive sessions.
A recent workshop saw a 12th-grade chemistry class from Anne Frank Comprehensive School in Viersen investigate sugar. They baked cookies using both regular sugar and a substitute to compare taste, texture, and health effects. The session also included analysing the sugar content in common drinks.
The lab offers flexible 60-minute modules called *Science Snacks*, covering current food science issues. Schools can book tailored workshops or propose their own topics. Beyond experiments, the programme supports career guidance by linking students to internships in university nutrition labs. Further details on the Food and Nutrition Lab and booking options are available at hs-niederrhein.de. The number of schools participating so far has not been disclosed.
The Mobile Student Lab has now reached over 1,000 students in its first twelve months. It combines practical science with career exploration in nutrition. Schools across the region can continue booking sessions for the coming year.
