Mourners recall Albuquerque medical professionals who perished in an aviation accident
Tragedy Strikes CSI Aviation: Beechcraft King Air 300 Crash Claims Lives of Four Employees
In a heartbreaking incident, a Beechcraft King Air 300 aircraft operated by CSI Aviation crashed near Chinle, Arizona, on August 5, 2024. The tragic accident claimed the lives of all four onboard during the aircraft's approach to Chinle Municipal Airport.
The twin-engine plane went down shortly before landing, crashing alongside a service road adjacent to the runway, and burst into flames. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the occupants died at the scene due to the severity of the crash and ensuing fire.
The available reports do not specify a definitive cause of the crash. The weather at the time was described as having strong winds but clear skies. The aircraft was on a medical transport mission, and there were no patients onboard during the flight.
The crew consisted of pilot Jeffrey Tuning (66), copilot Amanda Benson (25), paramedic Nick Mancuso, and nurse Kameilia Chavez.
Nick Mancuso, who had worked toward being a flight paramedic for over 13 years, was hired at CSI Aviation in February 2024. He was remembered for his calm demeanor, easy smile, and ability to connect with patients.
Kameilia Chavez, a mother of two, a wife, and an experienced nurse, worked in an emergency room for four years and was known for her positive attitude and ability to connect with patients. Her coworkers and friends remember her for her bright personality and ability to turn a bad day into a great one.
Chavez, who often talked about her family, particularly her two children, at work, brought light and positivity to her loved ones every single day.
Allen Weh, founder and president of CSI Aviation, expressed deep sorrow and announced a company-wide shutdown of flights due to the "trauma and impact." He also brought in counselors for the colleagues of those killed.
The nature of their business involves flying into "barely maintained" airports, and this was the first such occurrence in the company's 46 years.
Maricia Chavez, a friend and coworker, was devastated to find out she had lost her friend, calling it a complete shock. The crash left families, friends, and colleagues mourning in New Mexico and Florida.
As the investigation continues, the exact cause of the crash remains unclear. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of the victims during this difficult time.
