Mumbai's Coastal Road Gardens to Transform the City's Southern Shoreline by 2026

A major new green space, the Coastal Road Gardens, is set to open along Mumbai's southern coastline. Spread across 70 hectares of reclaimed land, the project was unveiled during Reliance Industries' 48th annual general meeting in August 2025. Designed as a 'Green Necklace' ahead of Marine Drive's iconic Queens Necklace, it will offer a mix of nature, recreation, and cultural attractions.

The Reliance Foundation, led by Nita Ambani, is developing the gardens at an estimated cost of Rs 400 crore. The site will feature diverse landscapes, with 55% dedicated to forests and woodlands, 25% to open recreational areas, and the remaining 20% split between pathways and plazas.

Visitors can explore attractions like the Sunset View Gallery, an Amphitheatre, and a Ferris Wheel. Sports enthusiasts will find Pickle Ball courts, outdoor gyms, and a Maidan/Flex field, while families can enjoy children's play areas and social gardens. An art gallery and festival plaza will also form part of the project.

The gardens will connect to the city through seven access points, including Napean Sea Road, Breach Candy, and Worli. Reliance Industries will oversee the operation and maintenance of the 5.5 km promenade, ensuring its long-term upkeep.

Key highlights include the Nexus Park, Garden trails, and a series of themed spaces designed for relaxation and community events. The project's name, Coastal Road Gardens, was chosen by Nita Ambani, reflecting its blend of urban and natural elements.

The Coastal Road Gardens are expected to be completed within three seasons. Once open, they will provide Mumbai with a sprawling green retreat, combining leisure, fitness, and cultural experiences. The project marks a significant addition to the city's public spaces, managed under the Reliance Foundation's initiative.
