National Nutrition Month 2026 Spotlights Gut Health and 'Food as Medicine'

March marks National Nutrition Month, a long-running campaign that encourages small, healthy changes to diets. This year's theme, 'Discover the Power of Nutrition', highlights the impact of food choices on overall well-being. Nutrition expert Annessa Chumbley recently appeared on ATL Live to share practical tips and simple recipes. The initiative began in 1973 under the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and has since grown into a nationwide effort. Leading organisations like Feeding America, FMI, and the St. Louis Dairy Council now play key roles. For 2026, the focus shifts toward fibre, gut health, and the 'Food as Medicine' concept, supported by the Elevance Health Foundation.

The campaign aligns with the updated **USDA Dietary Guidelines 2025-2030**, which introduced a revised food pyramid. This year's recommendations feature whole foods, with brands like **Eat Pecans** and **Lifeway Kefir** included in suggested recipes. Chumbley's segment on *ATL Live* emphasised accessible ways to improve nutrition without drastic changes. Other participants include **Willis Knighton Health**, **Pillar Health**, and the **Metropolitan Health District**, all promoting evidence-based eating habits. The push for better nutrition also reflects broader trends, such as last year's protein focus and the upcoming 2026 emphasis on gut-friendly foods.

The month-long event aims to make healthy eating achievable for everyone. With support from health experts, food producers, and government guidelines, the campaign provides clear, actionable advice. Small adjustments in daily meals remain the core message for lasting benefits.
