Neurologist Explains How an Orthopedic Pillow Can Improve Sleep

Orthopedic pillows are becoming a common recommendation from neurologists for patients with neck pain, herniated discs, or muscle spasms. These specially designed pillows help maintain proper alignment of the head and neck during sleep. Experts say they can improve rest and reduce morning discomfort significantly.

Conventional pillows often force the neck and upper back into unnatural positions. This strain can compress blood vessels, cutting off steady blood flow to the brain. Over time, poor support leads to muscle tension and disrupted sleep.

Orthopedic pillows, in contrast, cradle the head and neck in a neutral, anatomically correct position. By keeping the spine aligned, they ease muscle stress and allow uninterrupted circulation. Dr. Vasily Fyodorov, chief physician at the Movement Institute Medical Center, highlights their role in enhancing sleep quality and morning alertness. Several German brands now produce these pillows. Options include Antar Medizin GmbH (EU-made), feela (designed in Deggendorf, Bavaria), and Fitkissen. Other manufacturers like Sei Design (Oranienburg, Brandenburg), TEMPUR, and Dermapur also offer locally made versions. Retailers such as Matratzenhaus stock additional brands, including Technogel and latex-based models.

Neurologists increasingly include orthopedic pillows in treatment plans for spinal and muscular issues. The pillows’ ability to support proper alignment and blood flow makes them a practical solution for better sleep. Patients using them report fewer aches and more restful nights.
