Neuwied Zoo Welcomes Unusual Capybara Triplets
Neuwied Zoo welcomed three capybara triplets on September 13, 2025, in an unusual public day birth. Mother 'Maddy' gave birth to her first offspring, who are developing well under the watchful eye of the zoo's animal keepers.
Maddy, a capybara female, surprised visitors by delivering her young in the outdoor enclosure during the day. Typically, animals give birth at night and in secluded areas. The birth was a rare public event, with no information yet on the triplets' names or genders.
The newborns, born already quite developed, could walk shortly after birth. They have webbed feet and can swim, with the family enjoying a swimming session together in the large water basin. The youngest sibling, though smaller, is the boldest and often teases its larger siblings. The trio is often seen playing separately from their parents in the outdoor enclosure.
Maddy's pregnancy was known, but the exact birth date was unpredictable due to varying gestation periods. After the birth, Maddy and her offspring were moved to the stable to allow Maddy time to bond with her young ones.
Neuwied Zoo's capybara family is thriving. The triplets are developing well, displaying their swimming abilities and playful nature. The sexes of the offspring remain unknown, as external determination at this age is challenging. The zoo looks forward to sharing more about these fascinating creatures as they grow.
