New ZahnRat Issue Reveals How Nutrition Transforms Oral Health

A new edition of ZahnRat, the long-running patient information brochure, has just been released in dental practices across five German states. For the first time in its 30-year history, this issue focuses on nutrition and its impact on oral health. The free guide offers science-backed advice, practical tips, and even a tooth-friendly recipe for readers.

The 124th issue of ZahnRat was created by dentists Dr. Anja Kulick and Shirin Nikkhah-Shirazi from Jena. Nikkhah-Shirazi, a 2018 finalist on The Biggest Loser, brings together dental expertise and patient-focused nutritional knowledge. The brochure explains how healthy foods strengthen teeth and gums while warning about the risks of acidic drinks and hidden sugars.

Inside, readers will find an eight-page guide with everyday tips, including a five-question self-assessment and a recipe for a tooth-friendly snack bowl. The publication also explores the benefits of intermittent fasting for oral health. A key recommendation is a varied, chewing-intensive diet to support dental and gum health.

The initiative has grown significantly since its launch. As of March 2026, ten German federal states—Baden-Württemberg, Bayern, Berlin, Hessen, Niedersachsen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, and Schleswig-Holstein—have joined ZahnRat through their state dental chambers. The latest edition is now available in Thuringia, Brandenburg, Lower Saxony, Saxony, and Saxony-Anhalt.

Dr. Ralf Kulick, President of the Thuringia State Dental Association, has highlighted the importance of a tooth-friendly diet. He stresses that nutrition plays a crucial role in maintaining strong teeth and preventing dental problems.

The brochure provides clear, science-based guidance on how diet affects oral health. It is now accessible in dental practices across multiple regions, offering patients practical tools to improve their dental care. This marks the first time ZahnRat has dedicated an entire issue to the connection between nutrition and healthy teeth.
